"That's the folly of man in my time." JW sighed dramatically and leaned back, brushing the twinkie crumbs off his hands. "They all think about how we could do things. Not whether or not we should. I still don't know what we got out of landing on the moon."
Unfortunately, that little revelation distracted him enough that he let go of the rubber band, letting it snap back into shape against his wrist. He flinched. "--Ow. Dammit."
JW made a face, suddenly realizing what he'd just said and knowing full well he had NO WAY of explaining outer space to Ginko. Thankfully, the rubber band stepped in for him.
"Watch out! I forgot to mention that they also double as a deadly weapon!"
He'd probably like to hear about it, if a good time ever came. Right now, though, he noted JW's expression and decided to save it - which was made all the easier by the rubber band, of course.
He snorted and removed the band from his wrist, rubbing the red spot left on his pale skin. "Maybe do me a favor and mention stuff like that sooner next time, huh?"
"You gotta forgive me, there's a lot to remember." At least he had the sense to look sheepish. He picked up the key, the last piece of the future. "These sure haven't changed much...maybe the way they're made, but a key's just a key."
"Kind of good to know that some things stay the same." He looked at the key thoughtfully as he set down the bread tie and rubber band. "It does look kind of different... sharper, I suppose."
The fireworks were over. JW hadn't planned this far so he simply sat and just...watched. He wanted to provide answers but he also dreaded the questions. He never finished school, he couldn't explain things like...how the heck a microwave worked. How? Goblins? HE DOESN'T KNOW.
"The--things! You can keep 'em. I don't need them."
He didn't often look at the magazines and the bits and bobs from the kitchen drawers would hardly be missed. James pressed his fingertips together and waited to see if the man who saved his life two times over would take a pile of junk from the 21st century as a thank-you gift.
He looked down at the items again - just a bunch of random objects, sure, but not like anything he had seen before. Artifacts from a time that had yet to come.
He gave JW a slight smile. "...Thanks."
Aaaand he would need to try even harder to keep Adashino from going through his box now. The last thing he needed was nosy doctors finding things from the future and... disrupting the flow of time or whatever it was that James had been so worried about the first time they met.
Situations like Adashino didn't even occur to James. He was a loner and nobody ever went through his things, probably because of The Snake Incident, so he saw no harm in handing them over.
The antlered man stood and shouldered his own bag and adjusted his hat.
"Road's not gettin' any shorter, is it? I should probably go."
"Yeah." Ginko set about gathering the objects on the ground, shifting his box off his back and pulling out an empty drawer so he could get it all in there before stepping back into the rain.
He glanced up at JW as he straightened up. "...Come to think of it, I still haven't gotten your name, have I?"
Oh! He...had left that out, hadn't he? A whole two days too. He drew himself up and proudly announced, "That depends on how much trouble I'm currently in, but you can call me JW if you want."
"I think I will. I'm Ginko, if you didn't catch it last time." Given that the first time Ginko had told JW his name was while JW was trying to flee the area.
"Aw, but Clover's so fitting...I mean look at you." He gestured to Ginko's unique hair. He dips his antlers in parting and makes his way back out to the road. Once he was out in the rain again he finally waved "Watch out for invisi-worms!"
