Ginko nodded, grabbing the bowl and bringing it to the kitchen. He returned to the couch as quickly as he could, sitting back down next to JW and cringing a little at his coughing.
"Hmm... same as usual, mostly." He tapped his fingers idly against the couch as he considered what had happened that he could actually tell JW about. "The suiko infestation in the village seems to be gone for good now, so that's been a relief."
He hesitated for a moment. Technically speaking, yes, the apparently-final disappearance of the infestation meant that his job in the village was done. If he came by again, it would be purely by chance, and there was no telling how many months - or even years - in the future that would be.
"...Well. The fact that it seems to be gone doesn't mean there's no chance of it coming back. Probably for the best to keep checking."
He would just... try not to think too much about why he was so set on this.
"And besides, I might need help with the mushi on this side of the river too. I'll show you some--" JW broke off and fell prey to another loud coughing fit. His face twisted up in frustration as he waited for it to end so he could continue. "-- show-how you some weird spots I haven't been able to figure out."
"Good." He sank further back into the sofa and after a thought, regretted it because he was all bundled up and now the remote was on the coffee table. "Hey. Here's a project for ya. Grab that little back square thing, hit the green button, then punch in fourteen."
Should Ginko follow the instructions, he would be rewarded with the image of a man with enormous hair talking in a soothing voice as he painted.
Ginko picked up the remote uncertainly and followed JW's directions, blinking in surprise when the television flickered to life. He sat back against the couch, tilting his head slightly as he examined the image on the screen.
Bob was painting a scenic lake today and they had caught him in the middle of adding a little fishing lodge off to the side. With a few swipes of his palette knife which had obviously been blessed by Satan himself, the lodge appeared.
"You paint? I know a lady that paints. Horses, mostly."
Bob materialized an entire tree with three flicks of his Cursed Hand.
"Yeah? What kinda things they paint in Nowhere Japan? Have ya'll hit the Bullshit Period yet? People putting colored squares on a canvas and adding, I dunno, a dead cat off to one side and calling it art. I'll show you some time, it's awful."
"Uh... I guess it depends. Landscapes, plants. People and animals." Shrug. It wasn't like he'd ever known a whole lot about art. "One guy I knew painted these incredible landscapes; he actually got by pretty well on that for a while."
He raised an eyebrow. "The 'Bullshit Period', huh. Yeah, I'll need to see that."
"Oh, you will. I'll take you to the library when I'm better. I'm sure they'll have a print or something up and if not, we'll find a book."
He coughed again and when he looked up, Bob had completed the previous scene and was now pulling forth a snowy mountain from another dimension onto the canvas.
"It's nice talking to someone who isn't Deuteronomy." He meant her no ill will, but she wasn't that great at making other people feel better when they were suffering. Also she stank and when his nose did open up, he became even more miserable.
"Glad to be of service." Ginko gave a very slight smile. Apparently coming here had been worth the trip up, after all. "I can stick around for a while, too, if you want; not much else going on today."
JW's brows drifted up. Oh. That was. Not something he'd considered and he buried half his face in the blanket to hide the stupid hopeful grin that suddenly appeared on it.
"That'd be--fine! There's room. It's a big house."
"Good to hear. We'll see how long I can stay, but... I'll try and be around for a while." And probably hover anxiously around JW constantly during that time.
JW stood up slowly and gathered up his blankets so that they draped over his shoulders like a king's robes. He waved for Ginko to follow him as he padded across the hardwood in a wobbly line.
"Guestroom's just right over here." He opened the door by the bookshelf. Nothing was inside except a bed frame and a dresser. "Oh...right. We got rid of that mattress because it was possessed. Uhm." He coughed. "Upstairs has a bed but you have to be careful."
Ginko followed behind JW, keeping half his attention on his friend to make sure he didn't collapse or something. He peered into the guestroom before turning to JW again, raising an eyebrow slightly.
"Careful, how?" Careful as in structurally unstable frame or careful as in some kind of dangerous mushi or faerie or something living in the mattress? He had no idea.
He led Ginko up the stairs and kept his hand on the rail the whole time. The first door to the right of the landing was the bathroom but the door straight ahead was a guest room. The inside was bare save for the bed, mattress, sheets, and all.
However it was impossible to see underneath the bed because it was bricked up.
"It...it should be fine." He gave Ginko a strained grin. "You'll be fine!"
He didn't want to explain the whole interconnecting multiverse of Underbeds. What if Ginko decided that it was Not His Scene and split?
"It's a comfy bed!" JW pushed past Ginko and moved to the bed where he pressed down on it a few times, making the springs creak. "Only a little dusty." He waved the grey plumes away and coughed. "Make yourself at home!"

"Good. Never hurts to be prepared. From what you tell me, mushi are a little like herpes. Never know when they'll come back."
He was really groggy ok.

"Me? No, not at all. Known a few people who were pretty good, though."
